Frequently asked questions
- What is the best app for the low FODMAP diet?
- Clairop is one good option for the label-checking and tracking side, because its barcode scan breaks FODMAP load into all six subgroups, each value citing the published paper it came from, and shows ingredients missing from its table as no data rather than assuming low. A scan is an estimate, not a measurement. It is iPhone only.
- What is the best low FODMAP breakfast?
- Build it from eggs, lactose-free dairy or yoghurt, rice, potatoes, corn, sourdough or spelt bread, modest oats and small portions of fruit. The traps are portion creep and cereals containing chicory root or honey, so check the ingredients rather than the front of the box.
- What are the best low FODMAP snacks?
- Simple foods in a measured portion: rice cakes, saltines, plain potato chips or corn tortilla chips, hard cheese, lactose-free yoghurt, peanut butter, eggs and one portion of firm fruit. Store-bought bars are the ones to check carefully, because they often contain ingredients that are not low FODMAP.
- What are the best low FODMAP fruits?
- At one normal portion, blueberries, strawberries, kiwifruit, oranges, mandarins, pineapple, cantaloupe and firm bananas are low FODMAP. Apples, pears, mango and watermelon are high in excess fructose. Portion size matters for every fruit, so stick to one serving.
- How long should I stay on the low FODMAP diet?
- Strict restriction is designed to last two to six weeks, with most guidance capping it at four to six. By the end you either have a clear improvement, and reintroduction starts, or you do not, and it is time to look elsewhere. Low FODMAP is a short structured process, not a permanent diet.
- How do I reintroduce foods after the low FODMAP diet?
- Test one FODMAP subgroup at a time, usually over three days with escalating portions, then wash out back to your low FODMAP baseline. Decide in advance what counts as a reaction. No published trial has compared one reintroduction order with another, so the sequence is a personal choice, ideally made with a dietitian.
- What should I do if the low FODMAP diet does not work?
- You are not alone: between a quarter and a half of people with IBS get no useful benefit. Check how the diet was carried out first, then whether another condition is involved, then other approaches with their own trial evidence. A dietitian can help you work through that rather than staying on restriction.
- Can I eat out on a low FODMAP diet?
- Yes, but it is dose management, not verification, because a restaurant meal cannot be measured. Eating out is hardest during strict elimination and gets substantially easier after reintroduction, once you know which foods and portions you tolerate.
- What does FODMAP stand for?
- Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols. In practice that means six things: fructans and GOS, lactose, fructose in excess of glucose, and the polyols sorbitol and mannitol.
